(Re) Chic

No explanation really needed, but here are some pictures of some things I "rescued" over the weekend.  Stay tuned for what they become!

I've been doing a lot of work for Christmas gifts and I'm so excited!  Here's what I've been working on:  Santa Cookie Plate  Browns/Harry Potter Shirt   Nativity Scene on old window Gold lettering on pink dress Shirt I made for me out of scrap gold  Super awesome intense owl shirt for my Mom World's Cutest Piggy Bank This is her favorite color, so I had to get it for her. 

If you know me you know I have a problem...a plants problem.  So naturally a greenhouse DIY is the best thing to ever happen to my Pinterest board.  The original link I found lead me to Country Living Magazine's tutorial which you can find  here .  Its pretty good, but doesn't accurately express the amount of frustration which I experienced with this project. Step 1: Find picture frames This seems incredibly easy, I decided that it would be simple to just go to our local Dollar Store and get $1 picture frames.  The problem: $1 picture frames are not wooden so attempting to nail or screw them results in them falling apart.  So then naturally you would just go to the thrift store, but then I was unable to find enough frames in sizes that would create what I was looking for.  Finally, I found a large pile of frames while I was at the Habitat ReStore where I could find enough (wood) frames for my purposes.   Pile of frames in my yard......

Since moving a year and a half ago my lifestyle and body shape have changed pretty drastically.  I no longer live within a block of a bar and I now work in an office where sweatpants are not acceptable (not even on weekends).  So my wardrobe needs a little purging. So below are my experiences with various different ways that have become popular to get rid of your closet and make a little moola in the process.  Local Consignment Shop:  This is actually how this post started.  I was living the dream, dropping off some of my nicer clothes to a local consignment shop and every few weeks I would stop by, pick up anything that hadn't sold and use my credit to by something that actually fit.  Then she called and said I had some items to pick up...2 bags worth! WHAT!?  Suddenly, I was out of credit in the shop and had two bags full of clothes that are REALLY NICE.  But that's the problem with consignment, you only get paid when she gets paid, s...

Here it is! The moment you've all been waiting for: how to make a vermicomposter out of an old dresser drawer.  The dresser drawers I had painted the drawers because I had planned to plant in them.  But I realized that this would be the perfect for some worms: small (I have a low amount of waste), easy to drill holes in, easy to move/keep inside.   The drill was all I needed to get started.  Thanks Megan for sharing the cost of the drill! Above you can see the drawer side, I drilled quarter inch holes every few inches along the sides with even more on the bottom-about one every inch.   I popped the bottom out of one of the other drawers to use as a lid.  Originally I had bought hinges but it actually leaves a gap that is great for air flow so I think instead I'm going to find some sort of latch for the sides...just in case my kitty gets curious.   A few copies of the Wilmington News Journal soaked in water ma...

Vermicomposting is exactly what is sounds like: composting with vermis, which is the Latin for worms.   I first became acquainted with vermicomposting when I started at Grow Food, Grow Hope in November 2009.  One of my coworkers was attempting to vermicompost in a container he kept in his desk and usually the 1st thing he said to you after "hello" was "want to see my worms?"  However, the worms jumped ship, were all over the office, and then were banned permanently.   Since that day I had a small adventure into composting with worms.  In my ignorance in the nature of compost I assumed that worms were always necessary for compost and therefore dug up worms from the backyard to add to my porch compost bin (an 18-gallon Rubbermaid tub I drilled holes in and added my food scraps to).  These worms of course were never seen again as they were cooked in my compost bin.   And then the research began.    Now tha...
